Things to Consider Before You Begin Your SEO Campaign

Starting a search engine optimization campaign can be a daunting and worrying thing to do, especially if it’s your first time or it’s a site you simply have to get things moving for. There are some areas that if you get right from the beginning can really help to make sure your SEO campaign will be a success and it is vital that you make sure you get the preparation completed before you begin with the SEO practices.

Below, we look at the things we consider absolutely vital to make sure you get right before you crack on with your successful SEO campaign.

Set Your Budget – If you are going to employ the services of an SEO company it is vital you work out how much you can afford to spend on their offerings. Most good companies will tailor a package to suit your budget. It really is so important you do not spend more money than you can afford because if an expensive campaign means the end for your company financially then it will just be wasted money. It is far better to begin with a realistic budget for a few months and then up the amount you spend once you see the success of the campaign, although this will take some time in most cases.

Work Out Your Content – A successful SEO campaign relies on content; content is the king when it comes to good traffic and a successful website. You need to make sure you can set aside enough time to write articles, press releases and blogs, because to get to the top of your game you need to work so hard on content writing and producing quality information. Many people overlook the importance of good content in an SEO campaign, thinking that a few links and Twitter posts is all you need, but, sadly, this is so far from the truth its unreal.

Identify Areas Of Focus – Another common mistake that some webmasters make is to not identify the areas that they really wish to concentrate on. SEO is made up of so many factors, link building, article submissions, press releases, social media and many other things that you simply can not concentrate on them all. Focus on the ones you know you can achieve, for some this will be loads of good content for article submission and for some it will be making videos that you can reap the rewards of social media traffic from.

Set Out Your “Dream” Keywords – Many webmasters forget to do the vital thing when they are beginning their SEO campaign and this is to work out and identify the keywords they are really interested in improving the rankings for. Obviously, every site owner wants to be top for the really big earning keywords, but sometimes you have to look at the lesser used but easier to rank for keywords and the long tail keywords that will get you immediate traffic. It is much better and more effective to focus on the lesser used keywords than the most used in the early days, because ranking for these top keywords will take much longer and will be easier to aim for when your site has been around for a long time.

Look At Your Site - Search engine optimisation begins at home and by this we mean that if your site is poorly optimised then your SEO campaign will be a complete waste of time and money. It is the equivalent of spending thousands of pounds advertising your new shop and then forgetting to order any stock, it is just not realistic to drive all this extra traffic to your site and then see people quickly leave because it’s just not right. Make sure that before you begin your campaign your site is as good as it can possibly be in terms of navigation, structure, content and loading time, because it has to be spot on to really make the most of the extra visitors your campaign will hopefully send to you.

Content vs. Seo

Search engine optimization is more than a buzz phrase these days. It’s the reason people are changing their websites and studying search engine marketing. Yet, it’s no substitute for engaging, quality content.
Drive customers to your site

Briefly, search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of discovering what keyword phrases consumers use when they search the web for your product or services – and adding those keyword phrases to your tags, description and text so search engines find you. It’s the foremost way to drive new customers to your website. If your SEO is done well, your site will be visible in the first page of an internet search. If your SEO is great, your site will top the search list.

Content is still key

However, in our haste to add keywords and key phrases to our html and website text, we often forget that search engines don’t buy from us – people do. What is the point of driving customers and clients to your website if you can’t keep them there?
Quality content is still the key to a successful website. A successful website engages people to read more, connect with you and buy what you’re selling.

Engage readers

Content includes text, images, podcasts and all other media that provides information on your site.
Your content must have a hook. The copy needs to be interesting and easy to read. (Read it out loud to make sure it flows well.) It should be compelling enough for the customer to click through your site and respond to your call to action such as newsletter, email tips, free e-book or shopping cart. If they don’t buy from you today, you want people to at least leave their contact information.

Short paragraphs with summarizing subheads are the best format for easy reading. People tend to glance through a webpage and you want to catch their eye. Long paragraphs of content will make reading feel like work and cause people to leave your site.

Appeal to the customer

Your content should appeal to the needs and wants of your potential buyers. A story that triggers nostalgia and uses the five senses will attract readers and entice them to keep reading.
Some other ideas for good content are:

- Background information on each of your products
- Pages that compare your products to competitors’ products
- A directory of sites related to your product or service
- A glossary of related terms, industry jargon and abbreviations
- Humorous anecdotes about your industry
- RSS feeds related to your industry
- Interesting articles and case studies
- An advice column
- “How to” tutorials
- Product reviews
- Historical data
- Check lists
- Quotes

Keep them reading

Readers like fresh content – a new page, new blog, video, forum or even contests. Remember, you are creating a conversation. You want people to return to your website so it needs to be interesting today, a month from now and a year from now.

User-generated content like that found in blogs and forums gets your readers involved and creates fresh content. You can set up a dedicated area on your site for readers to share with each other. Members can lead the discussion on topics that interest them – plus, you will learn more about their wants and needs. You might also invite respected speakers and authors to write a guest article.

SEO is the second step

Once you have captivating content, you can really focus on the search engine optimization that will drive more people to your site.
Tools such as Wordtracker and Google Insights will reveal specific keyword phrases that people are searching for as well as phrases being used by thousands of other websites. Search for trending keywords that are popular, but not overused. Observe and research phrases from the past year and you will have an idea of your audience’s searching behavior.

With a good combination of interesting content and appropriate SEO, your site will attract search engines – and the people with whom you want to connect. Just keep in mind that your SEO tactics may bring people to your website, but only appealing content will keep them from bouncing to the next site.

Social Bookmarking & Web Traffic

Social bookmarking is a technique by which internet users store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the internet with the help of metadata. In a social bookmarking system, internet users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These social bookmarks are generally public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains.

Unlike storing bookmarks in a folder on your computer, tagged pages are stored on the Web and can be accessed from any computer. It is often called as “The real-time Web, organized by you.” Web sites dedicated to social bookmarking, such as Flickr and del.icio.us, provide users with a place to store, categorize, annotate and share favorite Web pages and files.

Off Page Optimization

Off page optimization (off page search engine optimization) is the techniques or strategies for search engine optimization, with the off page optimization strategies or techniques websites performance in search engine results pages (SERP) maximize its performance for target keywords related to the page content. Off page optimization includes link building and placing keywords within the link anchor text. Obtaining the links from the website or web directories also is considered as off page optimization.

The term ‘Off Page Optimization’ refers to web site optimization techniques and implementations that help webpage search engine ranking and that are not implemented directly on the ‘page’ or ‘.html’ file.
Off Page Optimization is a Search engine optimization method, which is done outside of the website to get the best positions for particular set of keywords and attract more visitors. Off page optimization concentrates on getting back links via various link building strategies for particular keywords.

Various ways through which off page optimization is done are as follow:
Directory Submissions
Link building
Blog Posting
Article Submission
Press Release Submissions
Forum Posting

Directory Submissions
Submit your site to various directories. There are free and paid directories. It would be advisable to submit your directories to free directories(especially DMOZ) and choose which paid directories you would like to submit to. It’s hard to say which paid directory is best, so use your common sense if you want to do paid inclusion. It is to be analysed by oneself about to use which paid directory is best for that one can visit the site of the firm providing such sort of services, if the services provided matched with the needs of the client then one can go for hiring the services from such vendor.

Link Building
In link building one can get inbound links for his website to increase its link popularity and to get the website into top of the search results. Some firms provide one way link building services from the relevant web pages and from the content which are relevant to the keyword.
Contrary to the common belief, that link building is as simple as adding a link in a website, link building is a complex procedure whereas we have to plan and execute the link building meticulously. If link building is not done properly then it may harm your website and you get banned in search engines.

Blog Posting

Nowadays everyone likes to leave comments in blogs. You can do it as well. And add your link with the comment. However remember not to spam blog sites, if you add a comment make sure that comment has something to do with the topic. It is also wise to post in blogs which you have some knowledge about.
Article Submission

There are some firms which offer article submission services which includes article content formatting, adding links in the articles, selecting proper anchor text and then submitting to free article directories in relevant categories. Submit articles you have written to article directories. Usually they have an author’s bio, where you can place your site’s URL in it with the appropriate anchor text.
Press Releases
Press Releases are another way to increase link popularity. Some firms offer Press Release writing and Press Release Submission to various Press Release websites. In this category if something has published through press about your company or the site or about the products and services you are offering that can be highlighted on the web pages so as enhance the authenticity of your company as a whole.

Forum Posting – Signatures allow you to place links and anchor text to your site. If you are posting in a forum related to your site( and with a lot of keywords), you can get better results in your rankings from these postings. However, do note that there are some forums which have the nofollow tag which tells Search Engines not to follow the link. This makes the link useless in search engine results page(SERP).

What Is SEO Off-Page Optimization?

SEO page optimization includes both on-page and off-page optimization. There’s a big difference between the two and you should not rely on one at the expense of the other.
When you consider the type of optimization techniques to use you must consider 2 factors: give the search engines what they need and give your web site visitors the information they need.

Each search engine has their own algorithm to determine which web sites meet their requirements and therefore obtain the higher SERP natural listing positions (or ranks) for a given keyword or keyword phrase in a user search query.

There are also a number of things you can do “off your web page” to improve your search engine page rank and increase targeted visitor traffic to your web site. This is the area known as off-page optimization. Off-page factors should be carefully considered and implemented to achieve a higher search engine ranking. These factors are primarily tied to the site’s linking (inbound and outbound) techniques. This is commonly known as link popularity.

Some of the factors considered by the major search engines in evaluating the off-page optimization of your web site include:

1)Which web sites are linking to your site? It’s critical that the web sites linking to your site are relevant to the content on your site and the linking site is considered an authority in its field by the search engine.
2)How many web sites are linking to your site? The number of relevant sites that link to you is a significant plus for your site.
3)What is the anchor text of each link to your site? The anchor text indicates the area of relevance the linking site places on your site.
4)What is the page title of the web page that is linking to your site? It is better if the title page of the linking web page is relevant to your site and contains one of your keywords in its title.
5)How many inbound and outbound links are on the web page linking to your site? The page rank of the site linking to you is influenced by the inbound and outbound links.

In conclusion, you need to evaluate and utilize some of the factors in both on-page and off-page optimization if you want to achieve high natural page listing on the search engines.

SEO Tips: Off Page Optimization
Off page optimization involves building backlinks to your site. If your site don’t have backlinks, it won’t rank on the search engine.

Websites that have a lot of backlinks will always beat websites that have no backlinks regardless of the relevancy of the article. If your site provide good content but has no backlinks, the search engine will not rank you because no one is recommending your site. Each backlink is counted as a vote to your site. To rank on the search engine, your site must provide good content and have a lot of backlinks.

One way to build backlinks through off page optimization is directory submission. Directory submission offers one way link for your website. Directory links are not as good as authoritative link. If you have one authoritative link, you will be able to rank well on the search engine.

Article submission is also an effective way to build backlinks to your website. Many article directories allows you to include 2 – 3 links in the article.

Press release submission is a great way to obtain backlinks. Press release has a date and venue in front of the leading paragraph. The press release should not be too long. It should be kept as short as possible. If the press release is too long, nobody will want to read it. The press release should briefly describe the product which you are selling.

How Can You Benefit From Blogging?

If you are already maintaining a web site, having a blog can add to, or enhance, your existing web presence. The ability to provide your customers, and readers, with fresh content on a daily, or weekly basis can keep your business running even during lean months. Blogging is also a great way for small business owners, with little web design knowledge, and small budgets to establish a professional, attractive, web presence. Many designers charge much less for a completely customized blog design and installation than they would charge for complete, traditional, html or flash website design.

When blogging first began becoming popular among businesses I was slow to notice the change. It seemed to me as though more and more of my competitors were shutting down their traditional websites and replacing them with well designed blogs. Other competitors kept their existing websites up, but added links to their websites that sent surfers to there companies newly created blogs. I decided to start learning more about blogging, but I didnt want to change my entire website format until I was sure blogging was right for me and my business.

I played around with a few different blogging platforms on a personal level trying to find out what all the fuss was about. I set up a small personal blog on Blogger and later a weight loss blog on Typepad. After trying out all of the major blogging platforms I realized that using a blog platform to power my site rather than the current html design could do wonders for my business. In addition to being able to make my blogs look, and feel, professional with little design knowledge, I was also able to easily add photo and text content to these personal blogs with no assistance. This was something I would never have been able to manage on my traditional site.

While any of these discovers would have inspired me to turn my existing site into a blog, the deciding factor for me was a confrontation with my website designer. I needed my site updated to promote an upcoming concert my business was affiliated with but the designer would not be available to complete the update until after the concert was over. I immediately began researching how to create my own blog on my own domain so that I would no longer be dependent on a web designer.
